The flax harvest in Ukraine will increase in the 2023/24 marketing year

In the 2023/24 season, the acreage for Oilseeds in Ukraine due to their higher profitability compared to Grains be expanded. This is the opinion of UkrAgroConsult analyst Svetlana Kupreeva.

She stressed that flax, which belongs to the niche group, will not be an exception. Its acreage can renew the 6-year maximum and, with 33,1 thousand hectares, surpasses the record of the last agricultural year (+20% compared to the 2021/22 marketing year).

At the same time, the expert notes that despite the expansion of sowing, the gross yield of these oilseeds in the current season has fallen by more than a third to the level of the 2021/22 marketing year and amounts to 27,5 thousand tons

“The expansion of the acreage was offset by a sharp decrease in yields, which fell to 0,86 tons/hectare (-44% compared to the record value of the 2021/22 marketing year, the minimum of the last four seasons)”, explains Kupreeva.

However, according to the analyst, the current weather conditions suggest above-average yields for the 2023/24 marketing year and a flax harvest of 40-41 thousand tons.

At the same time, the harvest in the 2022/2 marketing year has lost its export orientation, notes Kupreeva. The share of shipments in the total harvest of this oilseed fell to 44% compared to 83% in the previous year. According to the expert, this is due to the stronger position of Kazakhstan and Russia on the world market.
