Zimbabwe is considering importing corn from Brazil

Zimbabwe is considering importing corn from Brazil for the first time since 2014 as El Niño weather conditions negatively impact crops in the country, Bloomberg reports. As already mentioned, the drought caused by this phenomenon has reduced the maize harvest in Zimbabwe by about 60%.

In addition, a similar situation in neighboring countries, in particular, the potential of the maize crop in South Africa has reduced by at least 20% - to the minimum of the last 5 years, and Malawi and Zambia declared a state of national disaster due to the failure of the maize crop. In these circumstances, the Grain Processors Association of Zimbabwe plans to launch a tender to purchase more than 300.000 tonnes of maize.

“Imports are likely to be more expensive than those from South Africa as Kukrudza has to be transported by sea and delivery takes longer,” said association chairman Tafadzwa Musaa rare city
