Grain-growing area in France will decline by 7 percent


The French Ministry of Agriculture expects the cereal area for the 2024 harvest to fall to 6,81 million hectares, a decline of 6,8 percent compared to last year, despite the expected expansion of spring crops. The sown area for common wheat will decrease by 7,7 percent to 4,39 million hectares.

Due to the heavy rains since mid-October 2023, the area under cultivation of winter soft wheat increased by 7,7 percent to 4,34 million hectares, that of winter hard wheat increased by 6,4 percent to 0,22 million hectares and that of winter barley increased by 6,1 percent to 1,28 .XNUMX million hectares reduced.

Some of the areas that farmers were unable to sow during autumn sowing are sown with spring barley. The French Ministry of Agriculture expects the area under cultivation of spring barley to increase to 0,5 million hectares (+10,7% compared to last year) and that of spring common wheat to 0,02 million hectares (+6,4%).

The area under cultivation of pulses will decrease by 4,3% to 0,27 million hectares this year, and that of peas will decrease by 5,6% to 0,19 million hectares.
