Erdogan wants to talk to Putin about a new mechanism for Ukrainian grain exports

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will discuss a new mechanism for exporting Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will come to Turkey on February 12. This was announced by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, as Reuters reported. He noted that “new methods” of transporting Ukrainian grain to world markets are currently being sought.

“The previous “grain deal” worked within a specific mechanism. Now it has become clear that there is an opportunity to use another mechanism and efforts are now being made to concretize this opportunity,” the foreign minister said, adding that Erdogan would raise the issue in his meeting with Putin.

Fidan clarified that the ships continued to transport grain even after Russia pulled out of the UN-Turkey-brokered deal in July 2023.

“We want to resolve this de facto situation through a new mechanism,” the diplomat said, without going into details.
