Container shipping costs are rising sharply due to the Red Sea crisis

The costs for container transport from Asia to Europe have risen against the background of the crisis in the Red Sea, which has been linked to frequent rocket attacks by Yemeni rebel Husits from the paramilitary group “Ansar Allah”.usaDepending on the amount, it has doubled. This is reported by RBC, citing data from the international freight booking platform Freightos.

Recently, the cost of shipping a forty-foot container from Asia to Northern Europe has doubled, reaching $4000. In return, prices for the delivery of the same container to the Mediterranean countries rose to $5175 at the moment, analysts said.

The freight forwarders have already increased the price for the delivery of a container from Asia to the Mediterranean countries to up to 6000 dollars. We are talking about the transport of goods since mid-January. At the same time, the experts allowed a further increase in container transport against the background of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea. This dynamic, experts say, is being encouraged, including the practice of charging surcharges of $500 to $2700 per container.

A sharp increase in the cost of oil transportation through the Red Sea was previously reported. In the second half of December, preliminary freight rates for heavy tankers of the Suezmax type with a total capacity of about 600 thousand barrels rose to up to 87 points on the global scale. This dynamic was mainly due to the increase in the duration of routes bypassing the Suez Canal, as well as the reduction in the number of tankers available to transport raw materials.
