Sudan's wheat import needs will increase to 2023 million tons in 3,5


Sudan needs 3,5 million tons in the current year Wheat import as the projected local harvest falls by 30% after farmers switched to sowing other crops, the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said.

This year it is expected that the production of Millet, the staple food of Sudan, is resuming thanks to favorable rains, FAO reports. Thus, the projected wheat imports will cover almost all of Sudan's expected import needs of Grains amounting to 3,6 million tons, he adds.

"This will affect the food security of millions of Sudanese as international wheat prices continue to rise and the country's national currency weakens," the agency said in a statement.

In 2022, Sudan imported 2,7 million tons of wheat and Flour Worth $1,06 billion, humanitarian agencies have warned of a spike in hunger in Sudan, where more than a third of the population faced acute food shortages last year.
