Pakistan expects record wheat harvest

The Pakistani government expects an increase in the 23/24 season wheat production by 6% to a bumper crop of 28 million tons, according to a report by the Global Agricultural Information Network.

Punjab, the most important wheat-growing province, will produce 21,2 million tons, 1 million tons more than in the previous year. Production in the other provinces - Sindh (3,8 million tons), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (1,4 million tons) and Balochistan (1,6 million tons) - remained almost unchanged compared to the previous year.

The bumper harvest will help reduce the country's projected import needs from 3 million to 2 million tons in 2023-24, even as total consumption rises to 29,2 million tons from 30,2 million tons. In the last marketing year, Pakistan imported 2,6 million tons.
