Hungary has asked the EU to extend import restrictions on Ukrainian oilseeds

Hungary has asked the European Union to extend restrictions on grain and oil imports from Ukraine until at least the end of 2023, Reuters reports, citing Agriculture Ministry foreign minister Zsolt Feldman.

Hungary has also asked the EU to provide financial support to local farmers to facilitate the transport of grain stocks from domestic warehouses ahead of this year's harvest. "We are interested in ensuring that the harvest in Hungary is completed safely and that farmers can sell their produce," Feldman said.

In April this year, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia restricted imports of Ukrainian agricultural products and asked the EU Commission to buy Ukrainian grain accumulated from them. The overcrowding of markets in these countries with agricultural products from Ukraine caused dissatisfaction among local farmers who could not realize their own crops.

On May 2, the EU Commission banned the import of wheat, rapeseed, corn and sunflowers from Ukraine to Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Romania. The restrictive measures are to apply until June 5th. Transit of Ukrainian agricultural products through these countries is allowed.
