Wheat flows to Turkey will fall within 3 months due to change in import regime

Demand for wheat in Turkey is expected to be low in the coming months due to changes in the country's import/export regime. Changes to the import system mean local millers exporting flour must now first export the required amount before they can obtain a license allowing them to import wheat duty-free, AgriCensus reports.

All wheat imports not regulated by this license are subject to an import duty of 130%. The official document showed that "wheat imports, which must be carried out before the export commitments are completed, are not allowed between June 1st and August 31st". Although trade sources said it is still uncertain, there is a possibility that exports could be banned in May to get an import permit in June and if so, demand for imports is expected to be even lower in June . "Turkey will not import a lot of wheat until September," said a trader.
