Türkiye wants to reduce lentil purchases

Turkey is Canada's largest bulk buyer of Lentils and bought around 2022 million tons in the first nine months of the 2023-4,3 marketing year, which is 40% of all lentils sold during this period. However, the country plans to scale back its purchases next year.

Turkey's large lentil crop and growing financial problems will affect lentil shipments from Canada,” said Pruducer.

According to Tuba Memis, general director of Memisoglu Tarim-TAT, one of Turkey's largest food companies, growers have planted more lentils than last year and yields are about 25 percent higher.

There are sufficient stocks of imported products. In addition, the exemption from 20 percent import duty on lenses ends on June 30th.

"All the lens importers in Turkey have covered and stocked up their needs months in advance," according to a supplier.

It can be seen that the demand on the Turkish re-export markets has fallen sharply. Last season, Turkey imported 675.000 tons of red lentils. Tuba Memis expects imports to decrease this year for the above reasons as well as fiscal considerations.
