Guterres on renewing the “grain agreement”: I will not stop trying to achieve it

The world urgently needs Ukrainian food as well as “Russian products and fertilizers”, so the UN will do everything to restart the “grain agreement”. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said this in a speech to the UN General Assembly.

“Even though there is fighting, we must seek every opportunity to alleviate the suffering of civilians in Ukraine and beyond. The Black Sea Grains Initiative was one such path. The world urgently needs Ukrainian food, but also Russian products and fertilizers to stabilize markets and ensure food security. I will not stop working for this goal,” emphasized Guterres.

He noted that Russia's illegal war against Ukraine "set in motion a frightening chain of events." “Lives have been destroyed, human rights violated, families separated, children traumatized, dreams and hopes dashed,” he said.

Guterres added that Russian aggression has serious consequences for all of humanity. “Nuclear threats pose a risk to all of us. Disregarding global agreements and conventions makes us all less safe. And the poisoning of global diplomacy is hindering progress everywhere. We must not stop promoting peace – a just peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law,” he concluded.
