Canada approves new free trade agreement with Ukraine

Canada's House of Commons has passed an updated free trade agreement with Ukraine that was signed in September by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the CBC reports.

The agreement was passed despite objections from conservative MPs who criticized the law because of “carbon prices”.

The bill in question sparked a lengthy debate after the Conservatives accused the Liberal government of introducing a “carbon pricing” provision. In return, the Liberals accused the Conservatives of abandoning Ukraine.

“For this trade agreement to be implemented, Ukraine must agree to a carbon tax. We cannot support that,” said the leader of the Conservative Party in the House of Representatives, Andrew Scheer.

The trade deal does not require the Ukrainian government to commit to a carbon tax. It includes a provision requiring countries to “promote carbon pricing and measures to reduce carbon emissions” e.gusawork will be carried out.
