Australia reduces exports of chickpeas and lentils


Australia exported 34,9 thousand tons in July this year Chickpeas and 127,3 thousand tons of lentils. This is according to the latest estimates from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), reports Grain Central.

Specifically, it is noted that Australian chickpea exports decreased by 41% compared to the previous month, as there were no shipments to Bangladesh in July (20,6 thousand tons in June) and shipments to Pakistan fell to 23,1 (26,8) thousand tons, to the UAE to 3,5 (4,9) thousand tons and to Nepal to 1,8 (2,9) thousand tons.

Lentil exports from Australia also fell by 18% in July. The largest volumes were delivered to India - 61,6 thousand tons (126,6 thousand tons in July), as well as to Sri Lanka - 16,7 (25,4) thousand tons, to the UAE - 26,7 (0) thousand tons and to Bangladesh – 17 (0,1) thousand tons.

The experts note that Australia will continue to export its record crop of grain legumes in the 2022/23 marketing year. In the latest ABARES report, the experts raise their forecast for grain legume production in the 2023/24 marketing year to 1,2 million tonnes (+25% compared to the first estimate in June).
