Algeria will import a record 8,6 million tons of wheat this season

The FAS USDA forecasts that Algeria will import a record 2023 million tons of wheat in the 24/8,6 season as its own production is insufficient and consumer demand remains stable.

In the 2022/23 marketing year, Algeria's wheat imports amounted to 8,141 million tons and could fall to 8 million tons next season as its own wheat production increases from 2,7 to 3 million tons.

This season, the RF entered the list of the main wheat suppliers to Algeria, displacing the European Union from its leading position.

By the end of 2020. At the end of 2020, Algeria increased the permissible content of mite-damaged grain from 0,2% to 0,5% and opened its market to wheat from the Black Sea region. Since then, rf has increased and continues to increase wheat deliveries to the country, displacing traditional suppliers from France in the Algerian market.

FAS USDA experts believe that domestic wheat consumption in Algeria will be quite stable, with a gradual growth trend in the future. In the current season it will amount to 11,2 million tonnes. No noticeable changes in the milling industry, which includes 432 companies, are expected in the next few years.
