In July 1994, the Brazilian real (plural: reais) became the new currency in Brazil, following inflation of almost 3,000% in some of the previous years. Since then, Brazil’s economy has been operating with a solid currency and the inflation rate has fallen to between 3 and 9%. 1 real is 100 centavos, the abbreviation for the Brazilian real is R$ and the international ISO code is BRL.
