Ukraine has the potential to take a place in the pea protein market

Ukrainian farmers already have 128,6 thousand hectares Peas sown, which is 100 thousand hectares smaller than the indicator of the pre-war year 2021. Last year only 270 thousand tons of peas were ground. This is the lowest value in the last 10 years.

For comparison, in 2017, pea production reached 1 million tons, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food.

«On the world map, Ukraine was next to the pea leaders: Canada, Russia, China, India, Australia, Kazakhstan. For example, the production of this culture in Canada for 2022 made 3,4 million tons, in Russia - 3,6 million tons. The last increased the indicator over the last year at the expense of grand actions — occupation of the Ukrainian territories», the message says, noting that these are the Nikolaev, Kherson, Zaporozhye, Donetsk, Kharkov regions.

The Ministry emphasized that the pea market has developed rapidly in recent years. Proof of this is the fact that the global pea protein market reached $1683 million last year according to Research and Markets. It is predicted to keep growing and may reach $2028 million by 5086,9.

The possibility of exporting Ukrainian peas to China is now being actively discussed. Discussions took place last month. Therefore, maybe soon Ukrainian pea producers can get the opportunity to export them to China.

«The development of this culture in the world is due to several factors. First, pea protein is one of those Peas is a type of high quality protein and is far more beneficial than soy. Therefore, it was actively used in the food industry and for feed production. So it is a good signal for Ukraine to increase the areas under cultivation of peas with subsequent processing and to add value where climatic conditions allow," the ministry said.

Also, peas have a very positive effect on soil fertility by fixing nitrogen in it, which means that successors in the crop rotation need less nitrogen fertilizers, which reduces their production, especially in the current conditions of fertilizer price increases.
