Kazakh and Russian flax are driving North American oilseeds out of the world market


The growth of linen production in Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation and their active exports lead to a decrease in the share of Oilseeds from North America on the world market.

According to analysts' estimates, Kazakhstan has exported 412.000 tons of flax seed in the current season (August-March), which is 1,7 times higher than in the same period last year (238.000 tons). At the same time, the volume of oil transfers to China increased to 197.000 tons compared to 32.000 tons in the 2021/22 season. Another 117.000 tons were exported to the EU (2021 tons were exported in August-March 22/163.000).

The Russian Federation has 8 thousand tons in the 2022 months of 23/537 Lein exported, which corresponds to the value in the same period of the 2021/22 season, while the main volumes were also delivered to China – 365 (260) thousand tons. Exports of Russian flax to the European Union decreased by 127 (255) thousand tons.

In turn, Canada has exported its lowest volume of linen in recent years during this period – 117.000 tonnes (162.000 tonnes in August-March 2021/22), while only 2.000 tonnes have been exported to the EU in the current season, compared to 28.000 tonnes in 2021 /22 and 114.000 tons in 2020/21.

Regarding the forecast for the export of flex seeds from Kazakhstan and Russia, the export of Kazakh oil in 2022/23 may be 540 thousand tons (+118 thousand tons per year), while the export of Russian oil in Russia may be 840 (+30) thousand tons. Thus, the total share of the two countries in the global export market will be 80,5%. Canada can export up to 2022 (+23) thousand tons of flax in 230/11.
