Italy, the world's largest exporter of pasta, bought 2022 million tonnes of durum from Canada in the first eight months of the 23-1,09 marketing year, almost four times the total volume last year, Rproducer reports.
The next largest customer is Algeria with a volume of 648.400 tons.
Leif Carlson, director of market analysis and trade policy at Cereals Canada, said that "Italy will always import durum, even outside the European Union, to meet that demand," he said.
