A sugar shortage is expected in Romania after the export ban from Ukraine

The decision of the Ukrainian government to import Sugar Temporarily banning it could lead to shortages of sugar in Romania - the biggest importer. This is reported by the Romanian edition of Observator News.

Romania is the largest importer of Sugar from Ukraine. From October 2022 to April 2023, it imported about 85.000 tons of Ukrainian sugar, which is 26 times more than in the same period last year.

Romanian sugar imports from Ukraine account for 30% of the total import volume in the European Union.

In addition, there are only two sugar factories left in Romania. One of them, in the town of Ludus, has been struggling financially in recent years and was rescued earlier this year.

“We had a very big contract for July, 15 thousand tons, signed with Ukraine. But the manufacturer can no longer supply this quantity. We cannot be present with the goods within two months. Shoppers can certainly expect prices to rise on the shelves. There are very few goods,” said the plant's shareholder Michaela Neagu.

Production of the company's own sugar in Ludusch is scheduled to begin in September. The Sugar is made from beets that supply 250 Romanian farmers.

As reported, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine introduced a restriction on the export of sugar from June 5 to September 15.

The Economy Ministry said that Ukrainian exporters more than 350 thousand tons Sugar and sugar products, which accounts for 95% of the export forecast for the marketing year 2022/2023. Therefore, such a decision was made in order to avoid a shortage of this product in the summer-autumn period.
