Most of those harvested this year in Ukraine Peas will be exported. This was stated by the head of the Union of Legumes of Ukraine Antonina Sklyarenko, the organization's press service reports.
“In 2024 Ukraine will have at least 400 thousand Tonnen Harvest peas. The average yield of Ukrainian grain legumes is 2,3 quintals per Hektar, individual producers harvest up to 3 quintals per hectare. Before the war, domestic consumption of peas was 65-75 thousand tons, now it is half as much. Ukraine consumes no more than 40 thousand tons of legumes, we export the rest,” the expert said.
Sklyarenko also predicts that the area under pea cultivation in Ukraine will continue to increase until 2025.
“This year we expect farmers to grow peas on more than 160 thousand hectares. Unfortunately, the mined and occupied areas will fall out of the economic turnover. Two main factors influence the increase in acreage - export opportunities to India and China. In March, purchase prices are already around 2 thousand UAH pros Tonne increased compared to the numbers before the New Year. However, prices will be highest when Ukrainian peas are supplied to the Chinese market, which is a premium market. That is why the area under cultivation of legumes is growing and will grow even more in the next season in 2025,” said the association chairman.
In her opinion, the export of pea processing products is also promising for Ukrainian producers.
“In addition to India and China, Ukrainian peas are also exported to Pakistan, Turkey and the EU. Our producers have started processing peas into split peas - such a product is more interesting in terms of price and is in demand in the United Arfrom Emirates and Saudi Arabia. We need to work with the markets: farmers should visit international exhibitions, learn from experience and establish new contacts,” said Sklyarenko.
